- Considering moving your webshop to Shopify, for example from DanDomain or WordPress
- Afraid of losing data, customers, or SEO
- Want to know what you need to do yourself and what the agency does
- Want a realistic timeline
When we migrate, we move everything currently on your platform. This means you won't lose customers, and you won't have to recreate products from scratch.
- Products
- Customers
- Order history
- Data and files
- 301 redirects, so old links still work
Payment solutions and shipping integrations can also be set up as part of the project. We outline exactly what is included and what is not in the proposal, so you know exactly what you are getting. DanDomain and WordPress are the two platforms we have migrated from the most.
- Review of your current setup. What data exists, which integrations are running, and what needs to be migrated.
- Design in Figma first. We create mockups so you can see and provide feedback before anything is built. This is because it can cost 20-30 extra days to change a design once it has been built in Shopify.
- Building in Shopify and data migration. Products, customers, and orders are moved, and payment and shipping are set up.
- Redirects. We map the old URLs and link them to the new ones. See the next section.
- Spot checks and testing, so we can ensure that redirects and data are working before go-live.
- Handover. From the day we hand over, you are ready to sell. You will receive videos where we show you on-screen how to create products, handle an order, and create collections.
- Monitoring for approximately six months of dead links.
Shopify has a fixed URL structure: products are located under /products/, collections under /collections/, and pages under /pages/. Your old URLs are therefore different. Consequently, each old address must be linked to its new one using a 301 redirect.
This means that the links you currently have in Google will still work, and no customers will land on a 404 page. Redirects remain in place for about six months until Google has replaced the old URLs with the new ones. After that, they are no longer important.
The number of redirects hardly changes the workload, as it is about reviewing the old URLs and matching them with the new ones. Even so, always ask what is included so you know if the number of URLs affects the price.
Very little during the actual migration. Your most important task is to provide feedback on the design: are we on the right track, or does something need to change? If you respond quickly, the schedule can be met. If it takes two weeks to hear from you, the process will be delayed accordingly. You are welcome to be more involved if you wish.
Timeline: A realistic estimate is 40-50 days. If feedback is provided quickly, it can be done in 30-35 days.
Peak season: If you need your new shop ready before a busy period like Christmas, start earlier. This provides some buffer in the schedule and saves you from having to provide feedback during your busiest time.
Even with correct redirects, Google will register that you have moved to Shopify. This is not a problem, but it can cause temporary fluctuations in rankings. It is important to know this in advance so it doesn't come as a surprise.
We recommend setting up a small app to monitor broken links for approximately the first six months. It detects if a visitor lands on a dead link, allowing us to redirect them to the correct page. Typically, it finds five to ten obscure, very old links.
Most brands are very self-sufficient afterward and rarely need help with the small things.
DVISIONMEDIA's approach
We handle the migration as a complete process: what needs to be moved, redirects, and handover. We agree on the design in Figma first, we perform spot checks on redirects, and we recommend monitoring for the first six months. And we are honest about SEO: we protect it, but temporary fluctuations can occur. That is part of the approach we build into our work with Shopify webshops and through E-COM OS. See also how we have done it in our cases.
1. Will I lose my SEO when I migrate to Shopify?
With correct 301 redirects, there are no 404 pages, and your old links will work. However, Google will register the move, so there may be temporary fluctuations. SEO is protected but cannot be guaranteed.
2. How long does a migration to Shopify take?
Our standard is a realistic 40-50 days. If feedback is provided quickly, it can be done in 30-35 days.
3. What is moved during a migration?
Products, customers, order history, and files, plus 301 redirects from the old URLs to the new ones.
4. How long should redirects remain in place?
For about six months, until Google has replaced the old URLs with the new ones.
5. What do I need to do during the migration?
Provide feedback on the design. We handle the rest.
