Google AI Overviews are AI-generated answers that appear at the top of Google search results. When someone performs a search, Google's Gemini model generates a summary answer based on content from selected websites. That answer appears above the traditional blue links.
It fundamentally changes how search works.
Traditionally, someone would search for "best email marketing platform for Shopify," get a list of links, click, and read. Now, they get an AI-generated answer directly in the search result. Some links are cited with a source reference. Many are not.
If you aren't cited, you don't exist in the answer.
What is GEO?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the process of optimizing your content and digital presence so that AI platforms choose to cite, reference, and recommend you when generating answers for users.
Traditional SEO optimizes for clicks from a list of blue links. GEO optimizes for being selected as a source when AI systems synthesize and present answers.
The two are related, but not the same. You can rank #1 on Google and still not be cited in AI Overviews. And you can be cited in AI Overviews without ranking #1 organically.
Which AI systems are relevant?
Google AI Overviews displays AI-generated answers at the top of search results, using Google's Gemini AI to synthesize information from multiple sources. ChatGPT has over 800 million weekly users globally and has become a real search engine. Perplexity processes over 780 million searches monthly and focuses specifically on research-oriented searches with direct source citations.
All three are relevant for a Danish e-commerce agency or brand.
The good news
AI systems need authoritative content to base their answers on. They pull that content from websites like yours. If you have strong, structured, and fact-based content, the chance of being cited is real.
Brands that use structured data, credibility, and precise answers in their content perform best in AI Overviews.
The bad news
Your existing SEO strategy is not enough on its own. Content written to rank for keywords, but which does not provide clear, quotable answers, will not be chosen by AI systems. You need to change how you write.
What happens to my organic traffic?
It depends on the type of search. For informational searches (what is, how to, when), AI Overviews may reduce clicks to your site because the answer is provided directly. For transactional searches (buy, price, comparison), the effect is more limited.
The most important thing is not to worry about what you might lose. It is to ensure that you are the source the AI uses when it answers questions in your category.
1. Write clear, direct answers
AI systems cite content that provides a precise answer to a specific question. Start your articles and sections with the direct answer. Elaborate afterwards. Not the other way around.
Example: Instead of building up to the answer to "what is a good conversion rate?" over five paragraphs, answer directly in the first line: "The average Shopify store converts at 1.4%. The top 20% convert at over 3.2%."
2. Use structured data
Structured data, metadata, and product information must be optimized for AI systems, not just for humans. This includes schema markup on your product pages, FAQ schema on your blog articles, and organization schema on your website. Webworq
3. Build authority and credibility
AI systems prefer sources with proven expertise. This means:
- Document your results with concrete numbers and case studies
- Link to reliable data sources in your articles
- Maintain consistent and updated content
- Build backlinks from credible sites in your industry
4. FAQ sections are your best friends
FAQ sections in a question-answer format are exactly the structure AI systems are built to cite. Each question is a potential AI answer. Each answer is a citation opportunity. Make sure to have FAQ sections on all your key pages and blog articles.
5. Update your content regularly
AI systems prioritize current content. An article about Meta Ads pricing from 2023 will not be cited in 2026. Keep your key articles updated with current figures and trends.
Your webshop has two types of content relevant to GEO: product pages and blog posts.
Product pages: Ensure your product descriptions are fact-based, complete, and structured. Materials, dimensions, variants, and use cases must be clearly stated. Use schema markup for products, reviews, and prices.
Blog post: This is where the greatest potential lies. Informational articles that answer the questions your target audience is asking (what is, how to, when, which) are the primary sources cited by AI systems. Write one article per specific question, answer directly, and structure it with H2/H3 headings and an FAQ.
1. What are Google AI Overviews?
Google AI Overviews are AI-generated answers that appear at the top of Google search results. They are created by Google's Gemini model and based on content from selected websites, which are cited with source references. Google AI Overviews have been active in Denmark since May 2025.
2. What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
GEO is the process of optimizing your content and digital presence so that AI platforms like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity choose to cite you when generating answers for users. It is the new discipline alongside traditional SEO.
3. What is the difference between SEO and GEO?
Traditional SEO optimizes your content to rank high in Google's organic search results. GEO optimizes for being selected as a source when AI systems compile and present answers directly in search results or AI chatbots. The two complement each other and both are important.
4. Does Google AI Overviews negatively affect my organic traffic?
It depends on the type of search. For informational queries, AI Overviews may reduce clicks because the answer is provided directly. However, if you are the cited source, your visibility remains high. For transactional searches, the effect is more limited. The right strategy is to ensure you are the authoritative source the AI chooses.
5. What specifically should I do to be cited in Google AI Overviews?
Write content that provides direct, factual answers to specific questions. Use structured data and schema markup. Build authority with documented results and credible source citations. FAQ sections in a question-and-answer format are particularly effective, as they match the structure AI systems are built to cite.
